An astonishing shift is that the secretary of Board for Control of Cricket in India (BCCI), Jay Shah, would be the new chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC), succeeding Greg Barclay. The credibility of this transition to NDTV has been confirmed by sources.
The rise to number one spot on the global rankings for Shah acknowledges India’s growing role in cricket. As BCCI secretary, he has played a crucial role in establishing Indian cricket as a national game and formulating its policies.
It is expected that his election for ICC chairman will boost India’s position on the world stage its cricket scene. His vision and leadership could majorly affect international cricket’s fate making fans from everywhere eager about his contract.
Jay Shah is all set to replace the incumbent Greg Barclay:
During a video conference, Barclay informed the ICC directors—including Cricket Australia’s head Mike Baird—that he has no plans to run for the position for a third time. He made this decision after learning that Jay Shah intended to take his place in November. Shah has the support of the cricket boards in England and Australia, which gives him the necessary votes to be elected ICC chief.
“ICC chair Greg Barclay confirmed to the board that he will not stand for a third term and will step down from the post when his current tenure finishes at the end of November. Barclay was appointed as the independent ICC chair in November 2020, before being re-elected in 2022,” an ICC spokesperson told The Age.
“Current directors are now required to put forward nominations for the next chair by 27 August 2024 and if there is more than one candidate, an election will be held with the term of the new chair commencing on 1 December 2024.”
Only two Indians have ever held the role of chief of the ICC: Jagmohan Dalmiya (1997–200) and Sharad Pawar (2010–2012). When he formally succeeds Barclay in November, Shah—who is also the son of India’s home minister Amit Shah—will become the third person to accomplish so.
