England skipper Joe Root scored his fifth Test ton and his third as skipper to propel England to a mammoth 555/ 8 at stumps on Day 2. They added 292 runs for the loss of five wickets in the day’s play thereby dominating two successive days of Test cricket. Meanwhile, India fought back late in the day with four wickets in the final session. Root added 124 runs with England all-rounder Ben Stokes who scored 82 of 118 deliveries.
Meanwhile, in the post-match presser, Ben Stokes hailed his England skipper saying that he is by far England’s best player against spin.
Joe Root England’s Best Player Against Spin: Ben Stokes
“He is in phenomenal form, just making things look very very easy. The way he dominates spin is incredible to watch. I do not think we had an England batsman ever who plays spin like he does. He got an answer and an option to everything thrown at him. He is just a delight to watch at the moment,” Stokes said in a virtual press conference after the conclusion of play on day 2.

The England all-rounder also reflected on his attacking knock. His 82 was designed by 13 hits to the fence. He played with a particularly aggressive intent against the Indian spinners and especially against Ashwin. Ashwin went the journey on day two with just one wicket to his name, that of Ollie Pope.
“It is nice to come back in with a bit of time off and spending some time out in the middle. We are in a very strong position as a team after putting ourselves in scoring above 500 with still two wickets remaining going to day three.”
Meanwhile, Joe Root also registered the highest score for a player playing in his 100th Test, breaking the record of former Pakistan skipper Inzamam-ul-Haq to achieve this feat.
In the final 10 overs of the day’s play England scored just 27 runs ending on 555/8 at stumps. Ishant, Ashwin and Nadeem picked up two wickets each as Sundar has yet another wicketless day.
