Kane Williamson, the New Zealand cricketer has chosen not to renew his contract, for the 2024 25 season. However, he has assured his continued dedication to the Blackcaps in the run. New Zealand Cricket recently confirmed Williamsons decision sparking discussions about his future after New Zealands exit from the T20 World Cup.
At 33 years old and with a track record of 358 matches for New Zealand Williamson has chosen to forego the contract and step down from his role as whiteball captain. This move allows him to focus on extending his cricket career. The upcoming 2024 25 season, for New Zealand appears to have a schedule with bilateral series commitments until January.
However, Williamson will still be available for New Zealand’s eight World Test Championship matches, to reach the final at Lord’s in June next year.
Kane Williamson said: “Helping push the team forward across the formats is something I’m very passionate about and something I want to keep contributing towards. However, pursuing an overseas opportunity during the New Zealand summer means I’m unable to accept a central contract offer.”
“Playing for New Zealand is something I treasure, and my desire to give back to the team remains undiminished. My life outside cricket has changed however – spending more time with my family and enjoying experiences with them at home or abroad is something that’s even more important to me.”
New Zealand will start their WTC campaign at the end of November with the first Test of a three-match series against England at home. Williamson expressed satisfaction in finding a balance between his personal and professional life while continuing to serve his country.
NZC CEO Scott Weenink praised Williamson’s contributions, acknowledging that he deserved the opportunity to step back and focus on other goals, including family commitments. Despite their early T20 World Cup exit, New Zealand ended their campaign on a high note with a decisive seven-wicket victory over Papua New Guinea.
