Defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) made a splash on Day 1 of the IPL 2025 auction by securing Venkatesh Iyer for a staggering ₹23.75 crore, making him the third most-expensive player in IPL history. On Day 2, KKR bolstered their pace attack by signing Umran Malik and Australian speedster Spencer Johnson.
The three-time champions also brought back key players Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Vaibhav Arora, retaining much of their core from the previous season. Other notable acquisitions include South African stars Anrich Nortje and Quinton de Kock. There is speculation that Venkatesh Iyer might be handed the captaincy for IPL 2025.
Earlier this year, Dwayne Bravo replaced Gautam Gambhir as head coach, following Gambhir’s appointment as India’s head coach. KKR retained six players, including the West Indies duo of Andre Russell and Sunil Narine. Among the capped Indian retainers are Varun Chakravarthy and Rinku Singh, while Harshit Rana and Ramandeep Singh, who recently made their India debuts, were retained as uncapped players.
