Indian cricket icons Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are set to skip the fourth round of the Vijay Hazare Trophy, continuing their staggered participation in the premier domestic one-day competition. The latest round will see Mumbai face Goa in Jaipur, while Delhi take on Odisha in Alur, but neither of India’s senior batters will be part of these fixtures.
Both players featured in the opening rounds of the tournament before opting out of the previous matchday, and their absence has again been confirmed for this phase. The decision has sparked discussion among fans, especially given the renewed emphasis on senior players returning to domestic cricket in recent times.
Strategic Scheduling and Team Commitments
The primary reason behind Rohit Sharma’s absence is his packed international schedule. The Indian captain had planned to play only a limited number of domestic matches, and his Vijay Hazare stint was always expected to be short. With the ODI series against New Zealand approaching in mid-January, Rohit has chosen to focus on national duties and workload management.
His participation in two matches for Mumbai was aligned with preparation goals rather than a full tournament run. The team management has been careful to balance competitive match practice with recovery, especially given the intense international calendar that lies ahead.
Virat Kohli’s situation, however, is slightly different. While he has also skipped the fourth-round fixture, Kohli is likely to make one more appearance later in the tournament. His decision reflects a measured approach—ensuring he meets domestic participation guidelines while also sharpening his game ahead of international assignments. Delhi’s upcoming match against Railways is expected to see Kohli return, giving fans another chance to watch the former India captain in domestic colours.
Domestic Mandate and Kohli’s Milestone
The Board of Control for Cricket in India had mandated that centrally contracted players should feature in at least two domestic one-day matches, a move aimed at strengthening India’s domestic structure and keeping senior players connected to grassroots competitions. Both Kohli and Rohit fulfilled this requirement early in the tournament. Kohli, however, has opted to go a step further by committing to an additional game, underlining his focus on form and rhythm.
In his appearances so far, Kohli has looked fluent and confident, producing scores of 131 and 77 that highlighted his class and consistency. These innings also helped him achieve a remarkable personal milestone, as he became the fastest batter to reach 16,000 runs in List A cricket. The achievement further cements his status as one of the modern greats, even as he balances domestic responsibilities with the demands of international cricket.
