The second ODI against South Africa in Delhi on Sunday, October 9, marked the debut of India’s 247th player in this format, Shahbaz Ahmed. In his debut match, he picked up his maiden International wicket, dismissing Janneman Malan.
Initially, it was given not out by the on-field umpire but was overturned when reviewed by India. Shahbaz, who plays for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the IPL, had a great season, contributing with both bat and bowl for the team.
But the journey for this cricketer wasn’t an easy one. Shahbad Ahmed had to shift from Haryana to West Bengal in order to have a career in cricket. His father Ahmed Jan in an interview with Indian Express recalled telling him that he should do something in his life or not return home.
“He was determined to do something big. Even his college professors told him that it was a mistake because he was a good student. Shahbaz told his head of department that ‘one day you will give me my degree and also felicitate me.’ And last year it happened,” said his mother. “He didn’t know how to cook, so his job was to clean the utensils,” said Jan.
“Maine usse us din kaha kuch kar ke aana, warna mat aana waapis (Do something with your life, otherwise don’t come back),” Jan revealed.
“Partha sir allah ke bheje hue farishte hai” – Shahbaz Ahmed’s mother
It was Partha Pratim Chowdhury who helped Shahbaz Ahmed get into Tapan Memorial Club. And then, there was no way back for the talented all-rounder. His mother Abnam after the match thanked his wards coach for looking after the former as his son.
“Partha sir allah ke bheje hue farishte hai (Partha sir is an angel sent by the almighty). Aaj ke waqt mey kaun kisi anjaan ko apne ghar mey rakhta hai, unhone Shahbaz ko apne bete ki tarah rakha, unhe jitni dua du wo kam hai (Nowadays, who gives roof to a complete stranger. He (Partha) took care of Shahbaz like his own son; even my endless prayers won’t be enough,” said Shahbaz’s mother Abnam.
Shahbaz Ahmed conceded 54 runs and taking a wicket in his full quota of overs. In the post-match presentation the captain, Shikhar Dhawan praised his efforts during the game.
Shahbaz can be pretty handy with the bat though he didn’t bat yesterday, in the IPL and the domestic circuit we have just seen the potential of this man and what he can bring to the team.
