Indian spinner Kuldeep Yadav has etched his name in cricket history by becoming the fastest left-arm wrist spinner to claim five five-wicket hauls in Test matches. Achieving this feat in just 15 Tests, Kuldeep has showcased his growing dominance in the longest format.
The record, earlier shared with England’s Johnny Wardle, now belongs to the Indian spinner alone, as Wardle needed 28 Tests to reach the same milestone. This accomplishment underlines Kuldeep’s remarkable consistency and his ability to turn games in India’s favor, particularly on turning tracks.
The milestone came during the second Test against the West Indies at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, where Kuldeep delivered a stunning performance, taking 5 wickets for 82 runs. His spell dismantled the West Indies batting lineup and helped India bowl them out for 248 runs in 81.5 overs on the third day of the match. His clever use of variations, including the subtle googly and sharp turn, made it difficult for the Caribbean batters to settle.
Dominance in the Series and Career Milestones
Kuldeep Yadav’s performance in the ongoing series against the West Indies has been nothing short of exceptional. With 9 wickets at an impressive average of 20.33, he continues to solidify his reputation as India’s leading spin weapon in red-ball cricket. Across his Test career so far, Kuldeep has taken 65 wickets in 15 matches, maintaining a stunning average of 21.09 and an economy rate of 3.55 — figures that put him among the most efficient spinners in recent years.
His return to the Test side has also been a story of perseverance. After dealing with injuries and limited opportunities, Kuldeep has demonstrated remarkable resilience, proving his mettle with every spell. His ability to extract both turn and bounce has made him a match-winner whenever given a chance.
India in Command After First Innings Brilliance
India had already built a strong foundation before Kuldeep’s heroics with the ball. The hosts declared their first innings at a commanding 518/5, thanks to outstanding centuries from Yashasvi Jaiswal (175) and Shubman Gill (129). In response, the West Indies showed some resistance in their second innings, reaching 173/2 at stumps on Day 3 with John Campbell (87) and Shai Hope (66)* unbeaten. Despite their fightback, India remained firmly in control of the Test, largely due to Kuldeep Yadav’s record-breaking spell that shifted the momentum decisively in their favor.
