Before the finals, India took on Australia in Group A match played at Super Sports Park, Centurion on 15th February 2003. Indian captain Sourav Ganguly won the toss and decided to bat first. Apart from Sachin Tendulkar who scored 36, Harbhajan Singh 28, India was bowled out for a paltry total of 125 in 41.4 overs.
Chasing the target of 126 runs to win, Adam Gilchrist and Matthew Hayden added 100 runs for the opening wicket in 17.3 overs. Australia chased down the target with ease as they won the match by 9 wickets with 166 balls to spare.
