India versus Australia, Finals World Cup 2003, 23rd March
Under the captaincy of Sourav Ganguly, India faced Australia in the final of 2003 World Cup played in South Africa at New Wanders Stadium, Johannesburg. Indian captain Sourav Ganguly won the toss and decided to field first.
The decision backfired as Adam Gilchrist and Matthew Hayden added 105 runs for the opening wicket. Ricky Pointing 140 and Damien Martyn 88 not out helped Australia post a massive total of 359 for 2 in 50 overs. It was a great batting display by Pointing and Martyn adding unbeaten 234 runs for the 3rd wicket.
Chasing the target of 360 runs to win, Sachin Tendulkar was dismissed cheaply and ended all hopes of India winning World Cup. Virender Sehwag scored 82 and Rahul Dravid”s 47 was not enough as India were bowled out for 234 in 39.2 overs. Australia won the finals by massive 125 runs margin to become the Champions of the World.
