Former cricketer Tom Moody has reacted to Sunrisers Hyderabad skipper Aiden Markram’s cluelessness over Umran Malik’s exclusion from the playing XI in the 2023 Indian Premier League. He expressed that Markram’s statement implies that he has very little say in the team selection of the franchise.
The Sunrisers Hyderabad management has received a lot of backlash over their handling of Umran Malik. During the toss ceremony against the Royal Challengers Bangalore, skipper Aiden Markram expressed that he is not sure about the reason for Umran Malik’s exclusion from the XI. He said,
“I am not too sure, to be honest with you. Obviously, he is a player with the X factor, and bowls at 150kmph, but I can’t, I don’t really know what is happening with him behind the scenes. But, certainly, he is a player that has a lot of x-factors.”
Reacting to Aiden Markram’s statement, Tom Moody expressed that it’s not ideal for a franchise if the captain has little say in team selection. Speaking on Espncricinfo, He said,
“I think that implies that he has very little say in the selection and he may have an opinion on Umran Malik the cricketer and what he probably feels his season should have been like, with regards to opportunities to play.”
You need your captain and coach on the same page: Tom Moody
Tom Moody further expressed that the Sunrisers Hyderabad captain and coach are on the same page. He added that there are too many cooks in the kitchen for the franchise, which is causing trouble while team selection. Tom Moody said,
“That’s not ideal, you need your captain and your coach on the same page, working towards what you think is the best combination. Every franchise is different with regards to the involvement in the selection.”
“For some franchises, it’s a very simple process for the captain and the coach and maybe someone in cricket operations or other senior players will come up with what they feel is the best team. There are other teams where there are a lot of cooks in the kitchen. I think that applies in this situation that we are talking about the Sunrisers. There’s clearly a lot of cooks in the kitchen and we do not know who has got the tallest hat,” he added.
