The Indian Premier League (IPL) has played a crucial role in establishing India as a powerhouse in world cricket. This tournament has revolutionized the sport, providing both financial and professional opportunities for players across the globe.
However, despite its success, the IPL has also been plagued by several controversies that have impacted its reputation. As the league enters its 18th season, here’s a look back at some of the most shocking controversies that have rocked the tournament.
The 2013 Spot-Fixing Scandal and Team Suspensions
One of the darkest moments in IPL history occurred in 2013 when three cricketers—Sreesanth, Ajit Chandila, and Ankeet Chavan—were arrested for their involvement in spot-fixing. These players were accused of deliberately underperforming in exchange for money from bookmakers. The scandal shook the cricketing world and led to their immediate suspension by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
Further allegations of corruption surfaced in 2015 when Rajasthan Royals (RR) co-owner Raj Kundra and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) team principal Gurunath Meiyappan were implicated in spot-fixing. This led to both franchises receiving a two-year suspension from the league, forcing the IPL to introduce temporary replacements — Gujarat Lions and Rising Pune Supergiant.
Although the players initially faced lifetime bans, these were later reduced to seven years. The scandal significantly impacted the credibility of the tournament and led to stricter regulations being implemented to prevent further corruption.
Heated Clashes, ‘Slapgate’ and On-Field Spats
The IPL has seen its fair share of player conflicts, but one of the most infamous incidents took place in the inaugural 2008 season. During a match between Mumbai Indians and Kings XI Punjab, Harbhajan Singh and Sreesanth got into a heated argument, which ended with Harbhajan slapping his fellow Indian cricketer. The incident sparked widespread controversy, leading to a disciplinary hearing and a season-long suspension for Harbhajan.

Another well-known altercation occurred in 2013 between Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir during a match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). The two, known for their aggressive playing styles, exchanged heated words after Kohli’s dismissal.
Their rivalry reignited in 2023 when Kohli clashed with Afghanistan’s Naveen-ul-Haq, with Gambhir—then Lucknow Super Giants’ mentor—defending Naveen. Although tensions ran high, both cricketers have since reconciled following Gambhir’s appointment as India’s head coach.
Controversial Incidents Involving Owners and Captains
Apart from players, IPL franchise owners have also found themselves at the centre of controversies. Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, co-owner of KKR, was banned for five years from entering Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium following an altercation with security personnel in 2012. The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) claimed Khan misbehaved while trying to access the field, though he later stated he was reacting to a religious slur directed at him.
In 2019, Chennai Super Kings captain MS Dhoni, known for his calm demeanour, lost his composure during a high-pressure match against Rajasthan Royals. Frustrated by an umpiring decision regarding a no-ball, Dhoni stormed onto the field to confront the officials—an act that violated game protocol. Though CSK went on to win the match, Dhoni was fined 50% of his match fees for breaching the code of conduct.
More recently, during the 2024 season, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) owner Sanjiv Goenka was seen in an intense conversation with then-captain KL Rahul following a crushing defeat against Sunrisers Hyderabad. Although the details of their exchange were not audible, their animated discussion went viral on social media. Rahul later admitted it was an uncomfortable situation. Despite Goenka dismissing any bad blood, Rahul was not retained by LSG and later moved to Delhi Capitals.
While the IPL remains a major attraction in global cricket, its history is dotted with controversies that have shaped the league’s journey. These incidents, though damaging, have also contributed to reforms aimed at maintaining the tournament’s integrity.
