Vaibhav Suryavanshi will be one of the biggest attractions as India begin a new chapter under captain Shreyas Iyer when they face an injury-hit Ireland in the opening T20I at the Civil Service Cricket Ground on Friday.
Although reigning T20 World Cup champions India head into the series as clear favourites on their return to Ireland after three years, much of the attention is centered on teenage batting prodigy Suryavanshi, whose fearless strokeplay has generated massive excitement.
The match timings have also been advanced by one hour, with the game now set to begin at 6:00 PM IST (1:30 PM local time). Reports suggest the change was made to avoid a scheduling clash with India’s crucial ICC Women’s T20 World Cup match against Australia on Sunday.
Since the second T20I is also scheduled for Sunday, both matches in the series have been rescheduled accordingly. After an explosive IPL 2026 campaign with Rajasthan Royals and a brilliant 94 for India A in the 50-over tri-series final in Dambulla, Sri Lanka, Sooryavanshi stands on the verge of a memorable international debut.
However, his inclusion also presents a significant selection challenge for the team management.

Accommodating Vaibhav Suryavanshi in the playing XI may force India to alter their highly effective opening combination of Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson, with Samson having won the Player of the Tournament award in India’s recent T20 World Cup victory.
Moreover, Ishan Kishan has impressed at number three, making Suryavanshi’s potential debut a difficult selection call for the team management. The series also marks an important leadership milestone for Shreyas Iyer, who returns to India’s T20I setup for the first time since December 2023.
Succeeding Suryakumar Yadav as captain, Iyer will aim to use his successful IPL captaincy experience and strong understanding with head coach Gautam Gambhir to lead an aggressive middle order featuring himself, Kishan, and vice-captain Tilak Varma.
In the bowling department, the Indian team management faces a key decision, whether to bring a fully fit Harshit Rana straight back into the playing XI alongside pace spearhead Arshdeep Singh, or continue backing recent performers like Prince Yadav and Prasidh Krishna.
In contrast, 12th-ranked Ireland head into the series dealing with a major injury setback. The hosts will be without five key players, including experienced batter Paul Stirling and pacers Mark Adair and Josh Little. This will be a tough start for captain Lorcan Tucker, who leads an inexperienced bowling attack.
India hold a dominant 8-0 record over Ireland in T20Is, with their most recent clash coming in the 2024 T20 World Cup. Returning to play an international match at Civil Service Cricket Ground for the first time since 2007, India will aim to maintain their impressive T20I form this year, having won 12 of their 14 matches.
