Indian players KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer are unlikely to be selected for the Asia Cup 2023, which is set to be announced soon. According to sources from BCCI, their recovery is not sufficient for the continental championship scheduled from August 30 to September 17.

Despite sharing progress updates on social media, it is deemed premature to rush them back into international action. However, they are still potential contenders for the ODI World Cup later this year, provided they make a complete recovery.

The three-ODI series against Australia in September could serve as their comeback matches. Due to their absence, most players from the recently concluded three-match ODI series against West Indies are likely to be part of the six-team championship in Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

Both KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer have a chance for the ODI World Cup if they recover completely

Some bowling changes will take place, with Mohammed Siraj, Mohammed Shami, and Jasprit Bumrah returning. Prasidh Krishna, returning from an injury break, is being considered but might not make the final 15. Ishan Kishan seems to have secured his place as a wicketkeeper, but Rahul remains in contention. With Ishan’s inclusion, the team management will need to decide on the opening combination when Rohit Sharma returns.

Indications point towards Ishan and Rohit’s opening, with Shubman Gill moving to the middle order. The final team composition and batting order will be determined during the Asia Cup preparatory camp in Bengaluru from August 24 to 29. India’s first match in the Asia Cup is against Pakistan on September 2. Additionally, the World Cup schedule will be altered for six matches, including India-Pakistan and Pakistan-Sri Lanka matches.

The India-Pakistan match will be moved a day earlier to October 14 in Ahmedabad, while the Pakistan-Sri Lanka match is anticipated to shift from October 12 to 10 in Hyderabad. The PCB has been informed about these potential changes, and final confirmations are expected soon.
