Mumbai Indians opener Rohit Sharma will miss the upcoming Indian Premier League 2026 encounter against Punjab Kings. The experienced batter had sustained a hamstring injury during their recent home defeat to Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
Rohit was forced to retire hurt in the sixth over of the chase after scoring 19 off 13 balls and did not return to bat, as MI eventually lost the match by 18 runs. Earlier updates indicated that his availability would depend on scan results.
However, the injury appears to be more than a minor concern, and the senior batter could be sidelined for a period, dealing a setback to the team.
“The medical staff is assessing him… An official update will be given when available,” MI batter Naman Dhir said in the pre-match press conference (via Sportstar).
“Rohit Sharma is all but ruled out of Mumbai Indians’ next game against Punjab tomorrow. This could very well stretch to more than just one game,” an update from India Today mentions.
While Rohit Sharma’s absence is a significant setback for Mumbai Indians, they are set to receive a boost with the expected arrival of Will Jacks. The in-form all-rounder, who impressed during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, is on his way to join the squad.
Mumbai Indians Face Tough Task Replacing Rohit Sharma At The Top
Mumbai Indians, already under pressure after three consecutive defeats, now face a significant challenge in reshaping their top order in the absence of Rohit Sharma. While they do have an experienced option in Quinton de Kock on the bench, bringing him in would require sacrificing an overseas player to form an all-Proteas combination.
In terms of Indian alternatives, there is no direct replacement available for the opening role. As a result, MI might have to explore unconventional options such as Robin Minz or Naman Dhir to maintain their current overseas lineup.
