Mitchell Marsh Shuts Down Ashes Comeback Talk, Focuses On India Series

Australia’s performance in One-Day Internationals has been under scrutiny since their 2023 World Cup triumph. Despite being the defending champions, they have not managed to maintain consistency in the 50-over format.

Skipper Mitchell Marsh, who has taken charge in the absence of Pat Cummins, is steering the team’s attention toward the upcoming white-ball series against India. This series marks the beginning of their long-term preparations for the 2027 ICC World Cup in South Africa.

Earlier, the Aussies lost a home series to South Africa 2-1, further underlining the need for stability in their ODI setup. While Australia continues to dominate in Tests and T20Is, the same cannot be said for their ODI form, with Cummins’ frequent absences also affecting their rhythm.

Marsh Dismisses Ashes Comeback Talk

As Australia readies itself for the India series, Mitchell Marsh remains focused solely on white-ball cricket, avoiding any talk of a possible Ashes return. His impressive form has led to repeated speculation about a Test comeback, especially amid injury setbacks for key Australian players.

However, Marsh humorously dismissed the idea when asked if he had considered an Ashes call-up. “I’ve got tickets to day one and two. Haven’t asked the wife yet, so that’s about as much thought as I’ve given it,” he said with a grin, indicating no plans to return to the red-ball format.

Since his omission from the Test side last summer, Beau Webster has been a regular fixture in Australia’s squad. Marsh’s focus, instead, lies in leading a rejuvenated ODI team aiming to rebuild for the next World Cup cycle.

New Faces, New Opportunities for Australia

Australia’s ODI squad has undergone significant changes recently. With veterans like Steve Smith, Glenn Maxwell, and Marcus Stoinis retiring from the format, the team finds itself in transition. Key players such as Josh Inglis, Alex Carey, and Cameron Green are also set to miss part or all of the India series. “He’s okay, it’s on the very, very minor end. It’s a cautious take on it, but he’s all good,” Marsh said of Green’s minor injury.

In their absence, the selectors are expected to test emerging talents like Matt Renshaw and Mitchell Owen, both poised for their ODI debuts. The series will also see the return of Marnus Labuschagne and wicketkeeper Josh Philippe. Batter Matt Short, known for his aggressive starts, will have another chance to cement his place.

Praising his domestic exploits, Marsh said, “We know he opens for Victoria and Strikers and in T20 cricket around the world.” The Australian skipper also spoke highly of Indian stalwarts Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, calling it a privilege to play against them. “Had the privilege of playing against them quite a lot over the journey. They’re obviously legends of the game, Virat is the greatest chaser ever in this format,” Marsh added, showing mutual respect ahead of the high-profile series.
