New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner has openly admitted that despite his team scripting historic victories over India in recent times, the aura of Indian cricket continues to loom large over the Black Caps. New Zealand achieved landmark success by winning both a Test series and a bilateral ODI series on Indian soil — feats no visiting side had previously managed.
However, Santner made it clear that such achievements do not instantly erase the fear factor associated with facing India, especially in Indian conditions. According to him, India’s depth, skill level, and adaptability ensure that they remain one of the most intimidating teams in world cricket, regardless of past results.
T20I Series a Different Challenge Altogether
Santner stressed that the upcoming T20I series against India should be viewed independently of recent successes in longer formats. He pointed out that T20 cricket demands a completely different mindset, strategy, and execution, making previous Test and ODI wins largely irrelevant.
The New Zealand skipper acknowledged that Indian players are particularly dangerous in the shortest format due to their aggressive batting approach, varied bowling resources, and familiarity with home pitches.
He added that playing India in India is always a stern examination, one that tests a team’s temperament as much as its skills. For Santner, the focus is firmly on adapting quickly rather than drawing confidence from history.
World Cup Preparation and Leadership Focus
The T20I series also holds special importance as preparation for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, which will be hosted in India. Santner, who skipped the ODI leg to concentrate on his T20 workload, sees the tour as an ideal opportunity to fine-tune combinations and build momentum. He highlighted the importance of learning how to handle pressure situations against top-quality opposition like India.
As captain, Santner emphasized staying grounded, maintaining clarity in leadership, and ensuring the squad remains focused on growth rather than past glory. While New Zealand can take pride in their historic achievements, Santner made it clear that respect — and a healthy dose of caution — still defines their approach when facing India.
