England cricketer Joe Root slammed a brilliant hundred on Sunday in the first test match against New Zealand at the Lord’s Cricket Stadium. He led the hosts to a five-wicket win over the Kiwis and take a 1-0 lead in the three-match Test series.

On day three of the test match, England seemed to be in a spot of bother having lost four wickets for sixty-nine runs on the board, chasing 277. However, Joe Root got together with skipper Ben Stokes to bail the side out of trouble. The duo added 90 runs for the fifth wicket to take England to 159 runs before Stokes was dismissed.

Veteran English batter Joe Root continued to stand tall from the other end and scored an unbeaten 115 to take England home. He reached his century in the seventy-seventh over, with a flick past the mid-wicket region. With two runs from that delivery, he also completed 10000 runs in Test cricket.

Joe Root joined an elite list of players, consisting of the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Ricky Ponting, Jacques Kallis, Rahul Dravid, etc, who have scored 10000 runs in the format. He became the only second English cricketer after Alastair Cook to achieve the feat. Root also equaled the record for youngest ever with Sir Alistair Cook at 31yrs and 157 days to score 10k test runs.

Let’s take a look at how fans and former cricketers reacted to Joe Root’s match-winning century:

What a player, What a man: Ben Stokes lauds Joe Root

Joe Root sealed the win for England with a boundary through the mid-wicket region. He was awarded the Player of the Match for his unbeaten century in the fourth innings. Root was also supported well by Ben Stokes and Ben Foakes in the match.

Speaking post-match, Ben Stokes was praise for his team-mate Joe Root. He said, “To score 10000 runs and a century in the fourth innings, what a player and what a man.”Ā

This was Ben Stokes’ first assignment as the skipper of the England test team. The second test match of the series will take place in Nottingham from June 10 to June 14.
