Moeen Ali Criticises David Warner’s Comment On Joe Root Before Ashes
Joe Root

As the highly anticipated Ashes series prepares to kick off on November 21 in Perth, ex-Australian opener David Warner directed a pointed remark at England stalwart Joe Root. Warner highlighted that despite Root’s status as the second-highest run-scorer in Test cricket—surpassing legends and trailing only one—he’s never notched a century on Australian soil.

Warner mused that it’s a milestone Root surely wants to tick off but hasn’t yet managed. Underscoring the perceived vulnerability in Root’s game, Warner said England bowlers have long targeted his “surfboard-like” front pad with inswingers, particularly praising Josh Hazlewood’s consistent success at dismissing him.

Moeen Ali Fires Back — Unimpressed

Root’s former teammate Moeen Ali didn’t hold back criticising Warner’s remarks. On the “Beard Before Wicket” podcast, he dismissed Warner as “just being Warner,” labelling him “a bit of a clown” for attempting to unsettle Root mentally.

Ali defended Root’s resilience, noting that such sledging tactics had already failed—England’s captain had come out on top against India in their recent series with a stellar run-scoring performance. Ali emphasized that while some players might be rattled by such comments, Root isn’t one of them.

Setting the Stage for a Battle of Wits

This pre-series verbal exchange sets the tone for what promises to be more than just a cricket battle. Warner’s comment touches on Root’s achievements—yet plays up one elusive feat: standing unbeaten on home turf.

Meanwhile, Ali’s rebuttal underscores Root’s mental toughness and ability to shrug off attempts at mind games. With Root’s recent form—including dominant numbers against India, notably in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy—adding to his confidence, it’s clear that any attempts to get into his head may fall flat.
