Mohammad Amir Declares Retirement From International Cricket

Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Amir announced his retirement from international cricket again on December 14, after returning to the team in March 2024 for a series against New Zealand, his first in over three years.

He also participated in the 2024 T20 World Cup, where he claimed seven wickets in four matches. However, Pakistan’s early exit from the tournament ended his second stint in international cricket on a disappointing note.

Having last played in June, Amir shared his retirement announcement via social media, stating that although the decision was difficult, he believed it was the right time to pass on the mantle to the next generation.

“After careful consideration, I have taken the difficult decision to retire from international cricket. These decisions are never easy but are inevitable. I feel this is the right time for the next generation to take the baton and elevate Pakistan Cricket to new heights! Representing my country has been and always will be the greatest honour of my life.”

“I would sincerely like to thank the PCB, my family and friends and, above all, my fans for their continuous love & support,” wrote on a post on his social media handles.

Amir retires with 271 international wickets across formats, including 119 in Tests, 81 in ODIs, and 71 in T20s. He was part of Pakistan’s 2009 T20 World Cup-winning team, but his career was marred by the 2010 spot-fixing scandal in England.

Mohammad Amir’s comeback following the completion of his ban

The 32-year-old intentionally overstepped during the fourth Test of the series against England at Lord’s after receiving instructions from his captain, Salman Butt. The scandal was exposed by News of the World, which led to the arrest and brief imprisonment of Amir, Butt, and Mohammad Asif in the UK.

The trio was subsequently banned by the ICC, with Amir receiving a five-year suspension. After serving his ban, Amir made his return to international cricket in 2016, playing a key role in Pakistan’s Champions Trophy 2017 victory.

He also participated in the 2019 ODI World Cup, where he was the leading wicket-taker for Pakistan. Amir initially announced his retirement in December 2020 following a dispute with the PCB, but he reversed his decision in March 2024.
