Mohammad Azharuddin Requests An Extension To Respond To The ED’s Summons In A Money Laundering Case – Reports

Former Indian captain and Congress politician Mohammad Azharuddin skipped a summons from the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on October 3 regarding a money laundering case. He has requested additional time and received a new summons for October 8.

According to The Times of India, the case involves alleged financial irregularities in the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA). Official sources informed PTI that Azharuddin was called to provide a statement under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) at the ED office in Hyderabad.

The report also noted that the ED conducted searches related to these irregularities last November, with Azharuddin’s actions during his presidency at the HCA under investigation.

The Telangana Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has filed three FIRs and charge sheets related to a money laundering case involving the misappropriation of ₹20 crore from the HCA. As part of the investigation, the ED also conducted raids on former HCA secretary Arshad Ayub and ex-vice president Shivlal Yadav, among others.

Mohammad Azharuddin: A History of Controversies

Azharuddin first gained attention for being the only player to score centuries in his first three Test matches, a record that still stands. However, his career has been overshadowed by various controversies.

In 2000, the 61-year-old was given a life ban by the BCCI for his alleged involvement in match-fixing. He challenged the ban and successfully had it overturned by the Andhra Pradesh High Court in 2012.

“It was a long drawn out legal case and it was painful. We fought in the court for 11 years. Finally the verdict has come and I am happy that the ban has been lifted by the court,” Azhar had commented after the court ruled in his favour.

As a cricketer, the former India captain played in 99 Tests and 334 ODIs, scoring 6,215 and 9,378 runs, respectively. He captained Team India in all three one-day World Cups during the 1990s.
