Indian pace bowler Mohammed Siraj described former wicketkeeper-batsman Syed Kirmani as an inspiration during the launch of Kirmani’s autobiography in Hyderabad on Sunday, August 10. In response, Kirmani praised Siraj for his outstanding performance in the recent five-match Test series in England.

Kirmani, who scored 75 runs in Test cricket, is considered one of India’s finest wicketkeepers. Known for his lightning-fast reflexes behind the stumps, he was a fan favorite during his playing career. Besides his wicketkeeping skills, the 1983 World Cup champion was also a valuable batsman, often stepping up in challenging situations.

At the event unveiling Kirmani’s autobiography, Stumped: Life Behind and Beyond The Twenty-Two Yards, Siraj lauded the former cricketer, stating (as reported by PTI):

“Sir, when you won the 1983 World Cup, we were not even born. It has been a motivating and inspiring story of yours. I have heard from many players, your reflexes behind the wickets were extraordinary. Thank you so much for everything for the Indian cricket team.”

Between 1976 and 1986, Kirmani represented India in 88 Test matches and 49 ODIs. He amassed 2,759 runs in Tests, featuring two centuries and 12 half-centuries. His highest score in ODIs was an unbeaten 48*. As a wicketkeeper, he took 160 catches and 38 stumpings in Tests, and 27 catches with nine stumpings in ODIs.
