Nineteen-year-old Australian cricketer Sam Konstas is set to make his Test debut against India in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The young batter recently shared how his family reacted to the news of his inclusion in the Australian Test squad.
Currently representing the Sydney Thunder in the Big Bash League 2024-25, Konstas spoke about the emotional moment during a match against the Sydney Sixers. He revealed that his mother was in tears upon learning of his selection for Australia.
Konstas also shared that he was in the training nets when selector George Bailey delivered the news of his maiden Test call-up. Speaking to India Today, Konstas recounted the experience. He added:
“I was actually in the nets and I got the call by George Bailey and he told me that I was in the test squad, so I was so thrilled, called my parents straight away, they were very emotional. But yeah, hopefully we meet the team on tomorrow and then go from there. Mum was in tears, so I was trying not to cry and then dad was super proud.”
Sam Konstas, with 718 runs at an average of 42.23 from 11 first-class matches, is expected to replace Nathan McSweeney in Australia’s playing XI for the fourth Test against India, starting December 26 in Melbourne.
