India are now turning their attention to Namibia after a close and tense match against the USA. However, there are still worries about team fitness, with Abhishek Sharma unlikely to play. Namibia, on the other hand, say they will give their best despite not having much experience playing night matches.
Playing against associate teams has not been easy for the top sides in this World Cup, and defending champions India have already felt that pressure. They narrowly avoided an upset against the USA in Mumbai last week. Now, their campaign moves to New Delhi, where they will face Namibia.
The match against Namibia is being seen as a good chance for India to prepare and build rhythm. They would prefer to bat first and give their batters time in the middle before their big clash against arch-rivals Pakistan. More than their opponents, it is injuries and health issues that have troubled India in this tournament.
Washington Sundar has recovered and rejoined the team at the Kotla, and star fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah is also fit and ready to play against Namibia on Thursday. However, the team management is still worried about Abhishek Sharma’s health.
The attacking opener played in Mumbai despite a fever but was later hospitalized with a stomach infection. Although discharged on Wednesday, his availability for the Namibia match and Sunday’s clash against Pakistan remains uncertain.
“He (Abhishek) was examined when we reached Delhi. He went to the hospital, but I think he was discharged today and is doing well. We still have one more day before the game, so hopefully we’ll take a call tomorrow based on how he feels,” Tilak told reporters on the eve of the Namibia fixture.
Abhishek Doubt Opens Door For Samson’s T20 World Cup Chance
With Abhishek’s availability still unclear, Sanju Samson will be hoping to get his first chance in the T20 World Cup in Delhi. The Kerala wicketkeeper-batter looked in good form during Wednesday’s practice session.
He smashed a few big shots in the nets and then settled in against Varun Chakravarthy and Washington Sundar. Captain Suryakumar Yadav, who rescued India against the USA in Mumbai, looked in fine touch during back-to-back evening sessions.
After regaining his batting form during the New Zealand series, Suryakumar will be eager to continue that momentum and deliver another strong performance.
“Head coach Gautam Gambhir has asked us to play cautiously if wickets fall in clusters, as they did against the USA. Suryakumar bhai and I can play the anchor’s role if required,” Tilak added.
