South Africa faces a setback in their ODI series against Ireland and the upcoming Test series in Bangladesh, starting October 21 in Dhaka, as Nandre Burger will be unavailable for both. The left-arm pacer is dealing with a lower back injury and will return home to recover.
The 29-year-old did not participate in the two T20Is against Ireland or the opening ODI. He appeared in the first and third ODIs of the previous series against Afghanistan, but the Proteas lost both matches, with Burger taking just one wicket. Cricket South Africa (CSA) issued a statement on X, stating:
“Proteas Men’s fast bowler Nandre Burger has been ruled out of the remainder of the One-Day International (ODI) series against Ireland and the upcoming Test tour of Bangladesh due to a lumbar stress reaction. The 29-year-old experienced discomfort in his lower back, and subsequent scans revealed the injury. He will return home and undergo further assessments.”

The board announced that a replacement for Burger will be named soon.
South Africa chose to bat first against Ireland in the second ODI to secure the series
Temba Bavuma won the toss and chose to bat first as South Africa looks to seal the series in Abu Dhabi. The Proteas make one change ahead of this game, bringing in Kyle Verreynne to the side, following the injury to Tony de Zorzi. The Irish team remains the same as they look for their first ODI victory against South Africa.
South Africa had Ireland at 39/3 on the first ODI; nonetheless, a 152-run partnership between Ryan Rickelton and Tristan Stubbs ensured them 271/9 in 50 overs. Ireland replied back, and Lizaad Williams took four wickets while Lungi Ngidi and Bjorn Fortuin claimed two each, making sure that South Africa come out victorious with a 139-run win.
