The International Cricket Council (ICC) has issued a stern ultimatum to the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) regarding the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka and scheduled to begin on February 7.
According to the directive, the BCB must confirm whether Bangladesh will participate in the tournament by January 21, or “risk being replaced by another team” in the competition. This warning came after weeks of negotiations and uncertainty over Bangladesh’s willingness to travel to India for its group stage matches in Kolkata and Mumbai, with the ICC source telling reporters that “if they refuse to travel to India, then they should be ready to be replaced by another team as per rankings.”
The World Cup schedule, already finalized, leaves little room for logistical changes, prompting the ICC to resist moving Bangladesh’s fixtures to Sri Lanka despite repeated appeals from the BCB.
BCB’s Security Concerns and Proposed Alternatives
Bangladesh’s reluctance stems from what the board views as significant security and diplomatic concerns linked to recent events. At the centre of the dispute is the controversy over fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman, who was released from his Indian Premier League (IPL) contract with Kolkata Knight Riders following instructions from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
Citing this incident and rising tensions between the two countries, the BCB announced that it would not send its national team to India under the current conditions and sought either a venue change or a group swap that would allow the team to play in Sri Lanka instead.
In talks with ICC officials in Dhaka, the BCB even offered to swap groups with Ireland, a team whose matches are hosted entirely in Sri Lanka, to ensure that Bangladesh’s players wouldn’t have to travel to India. However, the ICC has shown reluctance to agree to such changes, reaffirming its commitment to the original venues and timeline.
Possible Replacement and Wider Impact
With the deadline nearing, the ICC has made it clear that a failure by Bangladesh to confirm participation could lead to another team — most likely Scotland, based on current rankings — taking its place in the tournament. The board’s insistence on a change of group or location reflects deep unease but clashes with the ICC’s assessment that the security risk for Bangladesh’s matches in India is not severe, a position supported by recent risk reports.
Meanwhile, the looming decision is drawing attention across the cricketing world, as stakeholders consider the wider implications for bilateral relations and tournament integrity if a full-strength Bangladesh side is absent from the marquee event.
