Gujarat Titans (GT) opener Shubman Gill has opened up on their IPL 2022 campaign, saying nobody considered them as a threat at the start of the season. However, GT played some superlative cricket throughout the competition and emerged as the champion, beating Rajasthan Royals (RR) by seven wickets.
Gill, who was a pre-draft pick by the Titans for INR 8 crore, didn’t have the best of campaigns with the bat. Although he made some telling contributions but struggled for consistency. However, Shubman Gill delivered when it mattered the most.
He played an unbeaten knock of 45 runs to help the Titans chase down 131 runs set by the Royals batting first. Gill finished with 483 runs with four half-centuries under his belt. On a personal level, Shubman Gill said that the season was quite ‘special’ to him.
“I think the season has been quite special to me. I have had some really good moments and I’ve had my down as well, but that’s how our season goes. I think tough players and tough teams do last if they have the right mind,” Gill said on the franchise’s social media handles.
“Nobody considered GT a threat among the teams and nobody considered us even in the top four teams who would qualify. When people were saying that, it did not make sense to me because it does not matter what people say. The important thing was, once we got the momentum we never really let it slip away from us,” he added.
“You obviously want to be better” – Shubman Gill
The 22-year-old also labelled the IPL as a tournament where one gets to redeem himself multiple times. Gill’s case in the IPL 2022 season is the best example of the same.
“After ending up on the winning side, you obviously want to be better and want to improve on your mistakes. But if the team is doing well and you are not doing well, you can still take it and move on to the next match. Because IPL is one tournament where you actually get so many opportunities to redeem yourself as a player as well as a team. That’s why this tournament is so special,” Gill concluded.
