Sri Lanka has faced another injury setback before their T20I series against India. A right-arm medium pacer Nuwan Thushara broke his finger while practicing making him unfit for the series.
ESPN Cricinfo has reported that team manager Mahinda Halangoda disclosed a serious injury to Thushara’s left hand. As it was added by Halangoda during a press conference, this occurred when Sri Lanka were having their practice session on Wednesday evening towards dusk and at that time the 29-year-old cricketer was involved in fielding practice sessions.
Dushmantha Chameera, a right-arm fast bowler, has been announced to miss the series on Wednesday, due to sickness while Asitha Fernando has been included in his place. As a backup for Thushara, Dilshan Madushanka might also be enlisted.
Nuwan Thushara has consistently performed well for Sri Lanka since he started playing
Nuwan Thushara debuted his career in international cricket in February 2022 against Australia in Sydney; since then, he has been impressive. He has played 11 T20Is and taken 19 wickets at an average of 14.57.
Among the Sri Lankans who represented their country well at the T20 World Cup 2024 held in the US and West Indies, young Thalawa Express was one of them with 8 wickets from only 3 games. He also got to register a magnificent feat when he took a hat-trick by bowling 4-1-20-5 against Bangladesh in Sylhet earlier this year.
With the T20I series approaching, there have been slight alterations to the national male squad. Chris Silverwood and Wanindu Hasaranga have resigned their positions as head coach and captain respectively, after the T20 World Cup. On an interim basis, Sanath Jayasuriya now serves as head coach while Charith Asalanka takes over as team captain.
In India, their rivals have changed too, although they appear to have a more stable group. The T20I series commences on Saturday, July 27th in Pallekele. In addition, the two teams will contest three 50-over games, starting from August 2nd.
