One out of these six names will be Team India”s next coach:- Tom Moody, Virender Sehwag, Lalchand Rajput, Doda Ganesh, Richard Pybus and Anil Kumble have applied for position of team India’s coach. Anil Kumble contract will expire after the Champions Trophy 2017.
The three legends of Indian cricket, said the BCCI, will “conduct interviews and seek presentations to select the best possible candidate to guide the team and take Indian cricket forward”.
Kumble has done wonders for Indian cricket winning the test series against West Indies in West Indies, New Zealand, England, Bangladesh and Australia in a long 13 test season at home. They also defeated New Zealand and England in the ODI Series. Kumble was made the Indian team coach on 23rd June 2016. His first stint with the Indian team was the four match test series against West Indies last July.
Virender Sehwag was the mentor of Kings XI Punjab team in VIVO IPL 10. His team did not reach the playoffs stage losing to Rising Pune Supergiant. Tom Moody was the coach of Sunrisers Hyderbad team and has done a decent job. The BCCI is unhappy with Kumble for big hike in contracts for players as well as his own salary.
Virender Sehwag played for India in 104 test matches, 251 One-day internationals. He would be an ideal contender for team India. Doda Ganesh has played just 4 tests, 1 ODI for team India. Anil Kumble has reapplied for men’s team coach.
Lalchand Rajput has been the manager of the Indian team which won the World Cup T20 in 2007. He is currently the coach of the Afghanistan Cricket team. In a media press release the BCCI has said that the deadline for applying for team India’s coach would be ending today.
The contract of Anil Kumble after the Champions Trophy might not be extended. Anil Kumble has been an excellent coach for team India. Ravi Shastri was the team director till last year.
Tom Moody played for Australia and helped Sunrisers Hyderabad to win the 9th edition of IPL. Tom Moody, Virender Sehwag would be an ideal coach for team India as they have spent most of time in Indian Premier League. It would be interesting to see if they continue with Anil Kumble or new coach would be selected.
After the Champions Trophy, the Indian team will travel to West Indies for 5 match ODI series and 1 T20 match from June 23rd.
