India is set to take on England in the opening T20I of the five-match series on Wednesday, January 22. The first match will be held at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata. The Indian team began their preparations with a practice session at the venue on January 19.
Star pacer Arshdeep Singh, who will spearhead India’s bowling attack against Jos Buttler and his team, joined the squad on Sunday night and participated in the training session on Monday.
During the practice session, India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav was spotted conversing with Arshdeep Singh in Bangla. In a video shared by the BCCI on its social media platforms on Tuesday, Surya is heard saying:
“Jaise ye paaji ko dekh kar yaad aata hai. Paaji bhalo? Bhalo paaji?” to which Arshdeep replied, “Bhalo achi.”Impressed by Arshdeep’s Bangla, Surya then added, “Paaji bhi seekh gaye hai yaha par reh kar.”

Arshdeep Singh Set to Play a Key Role in India’s Five-Match T20I Series Against England
Arshdeep, who made his international debut for India in July 2022 against England, will be a vital player for the hosts in the upcoming five-match T20I series. The left-arm pacer has a chance to break several bowling records during the series.
If he picks up two wickets in the first match, he will surpass Yuzvendra Chahal’s tally of 96 wickets in 80 matches to become India’s highest wicket-taker in T20Is. Currently, the record for being the fastest pacer to reach 100 T20I wickets belongs to Pakistan’s Haris Rauf, who achieved the milestone in his 71st match.
In comparison, Arshdeep Singh has played only 60 T20Is so far and already has 95 wickets to his name. Arshdeep was India’s standout bowler in T20Is last year. He finished as the highest wicket-taker in the 2024 T20 World Cup, playing a crucial role in helping Rohit Sharma’s team secure the title.
