Mujeeb Ur Rahman became the first Afghanistan batter to get hit wicket in the 3rd One-day international match against Pakistan played at R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo on 26th August 2023. Mujeeb was looking in fine touch with some brilliant shots but hit onto his stumps in the 46th over against Shaheen Shah Afridi. He came to the crease with Afghanistan struggling at 97 for 7.
He showed his class with some lovely shots keeping the pressure on Pakistan bowlers. His batting impressed keeping the scoreboard ticking and completed the fastest half-century by an Afghanistan batter in the ODI format off 26 deliveries. He finished as the top scorer for Afghanistan with 64 off 37 balls with 5 fours and 5 sixes.

Despite his efforts, Afghanistan could only muster 209 in 48.4 overs. Riaz Hasan opened the batting with Rahmanullah Gurbaz. They kept losing wickets at regular intervals and Afghanistan could not recover from this position. Mujeeb Ur Rahman made the batting look easy with big shots making life tough for Pakistan bowlers taking on Faheem Ashraf, Shahbad Khan, and Mohammad Nawaz.
Pakistan became the number 1 ranked ODI team.
Pakistan became the number 1 ranked team in the ODI format after defeating Afghanistan in the 3rd and final match on 26th August 2023. Pakistan captain Babar Azam won the toss and decided to bat first.
Fakhar Zaman began cautiously before showing intent against Afghanistan bowlers. Gulbdain Naib struck in his first over dismissing Zaman with a good catch by Riaz Hasan. Naib got the second breakthrough for Afghanistan getting rid of Imam UL Haq trying to hit a big shot caught by Rahmanullah Gurbaz.
Babar Azam and Mohammed Rizwan were never allowed to hit attacking shots against disciplined Afghanistan bowling till the 30th over. The experienced duo then attacked Afghan bowlers with big shots keeping scoreboard ticking. Rizwan completed his fifty off 69 deliveries while Babar also completed a half-century from 77 balls.
Rashid Khan eventually got the breakthrough dismissing Babar Azam. Babar and Rizwan added 110 runs for the 3rd wicket. Saud Shakeel was brilliantly run out with a direct hit by Gurbaz. Mohammad Rizwan and Shahbad Khan fell in quick succession to leave Pakistan in trouble at 189 for 6. Mohammad Nawaz and Salman Ali Agha soaked the pressure before hitting some lovely big shots. Nawaz and Ali added 61 runs for the 7th wicket. Pakistan recovered from a tough situation to post 268 for 8 in 50 overs.
Before this series, Pakistan needed to whitewash Afghanistan 3-0 to become the number 1 ranked ODI side. Babar Azam and Co won the first match by 142 runs after scoring just 201 runs. They were scrapped by one wicket in the 2nd One-day international at Hambantota after Afghanistan scored 300 runs.
