The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is set to change leadership, marking the fourth chairman in less than three years. Speculations point to Mohsin Naqvi, the caretaker chief minister of Punjab, as the frontrunner for the upcoming post, according to reliable sources.

The interim management committee, which has overseen the Board’s affairs since December 2022, will conclude its tenure on February 4, paving the way for the election of a new chairman for the Board of Governors (BoG) of the PCB.

In a recent announcement, the PCB disclosed that the election commissioner and acting PCB Chairman Shah Khawar finalized the BoG responsible for electing the new chairman. Mohsin Naqvi has been nominated to the BoG by Pakistan’s caretaker prime minister, Anwar ul Haq Kakar, who serves as the Patron-in-Chief of the Board. Another nominee from the prime minister, Mustafa Ramday, is also a part of the BoG.

PCB said: “The PCB should have a new chairman (Mohsin Naqvi) after the general elections (in Pakistan) on 8th February.”

It’s worth noting that Naqvi can only officially assume the role of elected PCB chairman after relinquishing his position as caretaker chief minister of Punjab. This transition is contingent on the conclusion of general elections. The PCB’s recent leadership changes have been notable, with three chairmen in less than three years. Ramiz Raja took the helm in September 2021, succeeded by Najam Sethi and Zaka Ashraf.

These shifts at the top have coincided with a dip in the national team’s performance, experiencing setbacks such as a Test series defeat in Australia and a T20I series loss in New Zealand. As the PCB anticipates a fresh leadership era, there is hope for stability and strategic direction to enhance the overall performance and standing of Pakistan’s cricketing endeavours.
