Wicketkeeper-batsman Parthiv Patel did not play a single game in IPL 2020 as Royal Challengers Bangalore had another disappointing IPL season. While Virat Kohli’s captaincy has been seriously criticised after another failure in the season, Patel believes that it’s incorrect to blame only the captain.
Incidentally, former India opener Gautam Gambhir has launched a scathed attack on skipper Virat Kohli soon after RCB bowed out of IPL 2020. He highlighted Rohit Sharma’s success to state that Bangalore should not pursue with Kohli as skipper from next season.
Parthiv is one of the senior players in the squad and he believes that the entire support staff needs to be reworked after yet another failure in the IPL. The Virat-Kohli led side finished fourth in IPL 2020 as they made the knockouts. Talking to Cricket Connected on Star Sports, Parthiv Patel kept his views on Virat Kohli as future RCB skipper.
“I personally feel he (Kohli) should not be the only one held responsible for RCB not winning. The role of Mike Hesson, Simon Katich – quite experienced coaches, been there and thereabouts. There isn’t just one factor that is responsible. I feel Virat is not the only one who is responsible for RCB not winning.”

RCB Had All Bases Covered For IPL 2020: Parthiv Patel
Parthiv Patel further said that they had a good squad this time and had all the bases covered. But the failure should not be blamed only on the captain but the entire support staff. RCB qualified for the playoffs but lost to Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Eliminator to bow out of the competition.
“I personally felt that we had a team that could win the tournament. Everyone in the camp felt it. We had all the bases covered. Sometimes the playoff games just don’t go your way. Scoring 130 in a playoff game, we came very close. I thought we fought really hard.
But as I said, you can’t just blame the captain. There are a lot of other things as well – there is director of cricket, there is head coach – there are a lot of other things involved in it. To blame the captain is also not true,” the wicketkeeper-batsman said.
This was another season where RCB promised more than delivered. They made it to the knockouts but lost the Eliminator against Sunrisers Hyderabad. With the next IPL season happening in the next six months, it will be interesting to see the kind of squad the franchise builds and if Kohli is retained as the captain of the side.
