PCB Faces Harsh Criticism For Delaying Salaries Of Star Players

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has once again found itself in hot water, facing harsh criticism from both the media and fans. This time, the issue isn’t related to the frequent changes in management or the inconsistent captaincy. Instead, the spotlight is on unpaid salaries for Pakistan’s top cricketers.

Salary delay controversy

It has come to light that key players from Pakistan’s national cricket team, including high-profile names like Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan, and Shaheen Afridi, have not received their salaries for the past four months. This delay has caused unrest not only among the players but also among fans and the wider cricket community. The situation has raised serious questions about the financial management of the Pakistan Cricket Board.

The PCB’s financial mismanagement isn’t just affecting the men’s team. The Pakistan women’s cricket team, under a 23-month contract since August 2023, is also struggling with unpaid wages.

“Last year, prior to the World Cup, players pressured the board to secure a favorable contract, but the current situation has changed dramatically. They have not received their monthly salaries for four months, from July to October, and have been left waiting despite numerous reminders,” stated the report.

“Additionally, the sponsorship payments for the logo on their shirts have also been overdue for several months,” it added.

For star players like Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan, the delay is more than just a financial inconvenience. These players represent the heart and soul of Pakistan cricket, and their delayed payments are a serious concern. As team leaders, the morale of the entire squad is at stake when they face such financial issues.

PCB’s explanation

One of the reasons for the delay, as reported, is the ongoing review of player contracts. The men’s team was awarded three-year contracts starting from July 2023, but poor performances have prompted a review. This is being cited as a contributing factor to the salary delay, but it’s a reason that holds little weight in the eyes of players and fans alike.

In response to the growing criticism, the PCB has promised that the issue will be resolved soon. However, given the board’s history of slow action, it remains to be seen whether this promise will be fulfilled in a timely manner.

“It is a work in progress. As soon as the lists are finalised and approved, contracts will be offered with effect from 1 July 2024,” the board said as quoted in the report.

While the players have largely remained silent on the issue publicly, reports suggest there is a lot of frustration behind the scenes. Babar Azam and other senior players have reportedly reminded the PCB about the unpaid salaries multiple times, but without resolution.

Upcoming England series

Despite these off-field issues, the Pakistan men’s cricket team is gearing up for a home Test series against England. However, questions remain about how focused the players can be when they’re dealing with financial insecurity.

The morale of key players is crucial for Pakistan’s success in this series. But with the team dealing with delayed payments, it remains to be seen how this will affect their performance on the field.

Meanwhile, the women’s team is preparing for the Women’s T20 World Cup in the UAE. Despite the financial setbacks, they are determined to make their mark on the global stage.
