India and South Africa faced off in the T20 World Cup 2024 Final at Kensington Oval in Barbados on June 29. Both teams maintained unbeaten records throughout the tournament, making the Final a thrilling encounter.
India won the toss and chose to bat first, judging the pitch’s favourable batting conditions. Early dismissals of Rohit Sharma, and Rishabh Pant, and a careless shot from Suryakumar Yadav left India struggling at 34 for 3 after four overs.
However, Virat Kohli’s composed 76 off 59 balls and Axar Patel’s brisk 47 off 31 deliveries helped India reach a competitive total of 176 for 7. During the chase, Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh’s diverse bowling styles accounted for the dismissals of Reeza Hendricks and Aiden Markram.
Quinton de Kock and Tristan Stubbs revived South Africa’s hopes with scores of 39 and 31 respectively. Heinrich Klaasen added momentum with a blistering 52 off 27 balls, placing South Africa in a commanding position. Hardik Pandya’s crucial wicket of Klaasen in the 17th over swung the momentum back to India.
Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh then maintained tight control in subsequent overs. As the match reached its climax, South Africa required 16 runs from the final over with David Miller at the crease.
Pandya, bowling the final over, dismissed Miller with the first ball while Suryakumar took a crucial catch at long-on, marking a pivotal moment. He then sent Kagiso Rabada back, conceding only eight runs in the over. India clinched the World Championship by a seven-run margin.
