On the eve of the first Test match between Bangladesh and South Africa, an unexpected clash erupted outside the iconic Shere Bangla National Stadium. This conflict was not related to the teams but rather centered around one of Bangladesh’s most celebrated cricketing icons, Shakib Al Hasan. Protests between two groups one supporting Shakib’s return to the Test squad, and the other opposing him sparked tensions, bringing political and cricketing issues to the forefront.
Why Was Shakib Removed from the Squad?
Shakib had initially been included in the squad for Bangladesh’s Test match against South Africa. However, shortly after his selection, a student body group known as Mirpur Chhatra Janata sent a letter to the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), demanding his removal. The BCB, citing security concerns, quickly responded to the demand, leading to Shakib’s removal from the squad.
The Clash Outside Shere Bangla Stadium
A group known as the Shakibians, fervent fans of Shakib, has been vocal in their support for his return to the national team. These fans gathered outside the Shere Bangla National Stadium on Friday, chanting slogans demanding Shakib’s reinstatement.
On the other side of the divide are those who oppose Shakib, largely for political reasons. This group, aligned against Shakib’s previous affiliation with the Awami League, views him as a symbol of the party they oppose. Their protests outside the stadium were not merely about cricket but reflected broader discontent with his political associations.
Shakib’s Response to the Controversy
Interestingly, Shakib Al Hasan has been notably absent from Bangladesh during this period of political turmoil and public demonstrations. As a global cricketer, Shakib resides primarily in New York City and has spent significant time in the United States and Canada over the past year, participating in various cricket leagues.
Considering the escalating tensions, Shakib opted not to travel to Bangladesh for the Test match against South Africa, citing security concerns. While his fans were disappointed by his decision, the political situation and the demands of the anti-Shakib protesters made his return to Bangladesh potentially dangerous.
Shakib’s absence from the Test squad leaves a significant gap in Bangladesh’s lineup. As one of the most experienced and successful players in the team’s history, his removal places additional pressure on the younger players to step up in his absence.
