R Ashwin Analyzes Steve Smith’s Unique Approach

As India gears up to face Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy starting November 22 in Perth, veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has revealed his insights into Australian batting star Steve Smith’s techniques and tendencies. Their longstanding rivalry, which began during India’s 2013/14 tour of Australia, continues to captivate fans as both players seek to outsmart each other on the pitch.

Ashwin explained that his stints alongside Smith at the IPL franchises Rising Pune Supergiant and Delhi Capitals gave him valuable insights into Smith’s preparation and game strategy. “Steve Smith is fascinating to bowl to, especially against spin. He has a unique way of handling both pace and spin, but I believe I’ve found ways to counter him over the years,” Ashwin shared in an interview with ‘7Cricket.’

A Battle of Wits on the Field

Ashwin commended Smith as a “thinking cricketer” who constantly tries to stay a step ahead of his opponents. Smith, known for his intense practice routines and strategic approach to the game, presents a unique challenge for bowlers. The rivalry is more than just statistics—though Smith has managed to score 348 runs off Ashwin while being dismissed three times.

Ashwin observed that Smith’s relentless focus on adapting to and countering spin has forced him to continually develop new strategies. “Sometimes, when you watch a batter’s process, you get clues on whether you’ve got an edge over him. With Smith, it’s been back-and-forth. There have been times he has me figured out, and times I’ve managed to get the upper hand,” Ashwin added.

Determined to Maintain Momentum

For Smith, the upcoming series presents a chance to redeem himself after a less impactful run as an opener following David Warner’s retirement. Despite a temporary setback with only 171 runs in four Tests as an opener, Smith remains a formidable opponent eager to make an impact.

Ashwin, who ranks as India’s third-highest Test wicket-taker in Australia, with 38 scalps, will be crucial to India’s bowling attack as they look to contain Smith and the Australian lineup. This fascinating rivalry is set to continue, with Ashwin aiming to maintain his “edge” over Smith, and Smith determined to counter Ashwin’s evolving tactics. Their matchup is anticipated as one of the key storylines in this high-stakes series.
