R Ashwin Suggests Making The WTC Final A Series Due To India’s Consecutive Losses

India’s spinner R Ashwin suggests transforming the World Test Championship Final into a series instead of a single Test match. He believes this change would allow teams to bounce back in a game of fine margins.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin emphasizes that India has faced consecutive losses in the WTC Finals. In a game with narrow margins, the defeat might not accurately represent the team’s performance.

Ashwin believes that a three-Test series would provide teams with an opportunity to make a comeback if they lose the initial encounter.

“Yes, we lost two WTC finals, I accept it wholeheartedly. But in a case of Test series, a comeback is always possible,” Ashwin said on his YouTube channel. “We played New Zealand in England, then we played Australia in England; we lost both. But was there a chance of comeback if we played two more Test?”

India faced defeats in two finals, one against New Zealand in 2021 and the other against Australia in 2023. The 2021 final was affected by rain, causing unfavourable conditions for India. However, in 2023, India was outplayed by Australia, leading to their loss in the final.

“It’s just fine margins. So, should the WTC final be played as a series? Is there a window available for it? The ICC should decide that,” Ashwin said

India now holds the second position in the WTC points table after being displaced from the top spot by defending champions Australia. Australia achieved this by sweeping a 3-0 victory against Pakistan in their home series.

The Australian team has made a strong start in the 2023-2025 campaign, initially drawing the Ashes series in England and subsequently dominating Pakistan on their home turf. Looking ahead, Australia is scheduled to host India for a 5-match Test series later in 2024.

Contrastingly, the Indian team managed to draw their 2-match series against South Africa. Following a challenging match in Centurion, India bounced back with a victory over South Africa in Cape Town, marking the shortest Test match in cricket history.
