Rajat Patidar has been included in the India squad for the initial two Tests against England. The 30-year-old Madhya Pradesh batsman’s selection comes in the wake of Virat Kohli opting out of the first two Tests due to personal reasons.
Patidar, who showcased excellent form recently with a score of 151 against England Lions in Ahmedabad, and 111 in a warm-up fixture against the same team, was part of the A side’s tour to South Africa late last year.
He made his international debut in December, opening the innings in an ODI against South Africa in Paarl. However, for the upcoming Tests against England, he is expected to feature in the middle order if given the opportunity.
Patidar’s inclusion indicates that, for now, Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane aren’t in consideration, prolonging the wait for Mumbai batsman Sarfaraz Khan. Rinku Singh’s recent addition to the India A squad for the second multi-day match against England Lions created an opportunity for Patidar to be included in the senior men’s side.
The 30-year-old, with a recent 151 against England Lions, replaces the unavailable Virat Kohli
Patidar has apparently joined the Indian squad in Hyderabad and was present at BCCI’s Naman Awards in the city, where the first Test will take place on Thursday. Representing Madhya Pradesh in domestic cricket, Patidar is recognized for his aptitude in the longer format and has experience batting at No. 4.
After an 8-month injury break, he has regained form, notably scoring 151 against England Lions in Ahmedabad last week.
The 30-year-old right-handed batsman, who made his international debut as an opener in an ODI against South Africa last year, seems to be preferred by BCCI selectors over Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane, suggesting a focus on the future.
Meanwhile, despite consistent domestic performances, Mumbai’s Sarfaraz Khan continues to wait for his chance.
