Ravi Shastri has now backed Shreyas Iyer as a solution for the number four position. It is to be noted that the puzzle hasn”t been solved yet for some years now. Several players including the likes of Vijay Shankar, Ambati Rayudu were tried, but there hasn”t been a permanent solution.
In the recently concluded ODI series, Shreyas Iyer scored two half-centuries and this impressed Shastri to the fullest. He amassed close to 136 runs in two games and made sure to prove his brilliance in the opportunity given.
In a recent interview with the Times of India, Ravi Shastri said “One of the areas we concentrated on over the last two years was to blood as many youngsters as possible. Shreyas Iyer, for instance, he is going to stay at No. 4.“
Ravi Shastri, who has been retained as the head coach last week will be with the team till 2021 T20 World Cup.
Number four or five?
However, Shastri”s words aren”t matching with those of Virat”s. In both the games Iyer batted at number five position. Virat backed Rishabh Pant to fill the number four spot, but no fruitful results were seen. It will be interesting to see how the management will try to fit in the line-up going forward.
The Indian side has won both the limited over competitions. The focus shifts to the test series starting August 22. The series marks the beginning of the ICC test championship for both the sides. With Brian Lara and Sarwan joining the carribiens as the support staff, can they bring a change of fortunes? We will have to wait and see.
