Ravi Shastri Salutes Travis Head After Ashes Masterclass in Perth

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri found himself openly marveling at the batting display by Australia’s left-hander Travis Head in the opening Test of the Ashes series at Perth. With Australia chasing a modest target of 205 on a lively, bouncy pitch at the Optus Stadium, Head seized the opportunity and smashed a blazing 123, steering his side to an eight-wicket victory inside a single session.

The innings stood out not only for the final score but for the context — Head was drafted into an unfamiliar opening role after the absence of Usman Khawaja, and still delivered one of the most dominant batting exhibitions seen recently.

Turning the Tide at the Top

Australia’s decision to have Head open the batting, despite his normal role in the middle order, proved inspired. With Khawaja unavailable, Head partnered debutant Jake Weatherald and wasted no time, attacking from the outset. He brought up his century in just 69 balls and carved out significant stands — 75 runs with Weatherald and 117 with Marnus Labuschagne — before his dismissal.

The result: England’s bowlers were effectively taken out of the contest in record time, and Australia grabbed a dominant 1-0 lead. Head’s knock featured 16 boundaries and 4 sixes over 83 balls, a stunning display of dominance under pressure.

A Message to the World

Shastri’s reaction captured the tone of respect and astonishment across cricketing circles. Posting on X (formerly Twitter), he addressed Head directly:

“Travis Head… two years ago, you plunged my country into silence. And today, you have done it again, in the best format of the game, in blistering fashion, with one of the great innings. Take a bow. England… that was special.”

By referencing Head’s earlier heroics—specifically his century in the 2023 World Cup final—Shastri underlined how this latest effort arrives in the spirit of a big-moment player rising to test.  The statement speaks to Head’s ability to not just perform, but to do so when the stakes demand it—and in that sense, this innings may find its place among his finest.
