Record-Breaking Attendance At The MCG

The Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) has shattered an 87-year-old attendance record during the fourth Test between India and Australia. Cricket Australia confirmed that over 350,000 fans attended the iconic Boxing Day Test, surpassing the previous record of 350,534 set during the 1937 Ashes series.

The highly anticipated clash, part of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, drew over 80,000 spectators on each of the first three days. The fifth day’s turnout further boosted the numbers, cementing this Test as a historic event for Australian cricket. This achievement highlights the enduring appeal of the Boxing Day Test, a fixture cherished by fans worldwide.

Indian Fans Drive Electrifying Atmosphere

Indian fans played a significant role in creating a vibrant atmosphere at the MCG. The stadium felt almost like home ground for India, especially during Nitish Kumar Reddy’s century. Attendance peaked at 87,000 on the first day and remained strong throughout, with day four drawing over 40,000 spectators.

On day five, more than 50,000 fans entered by the first session, with projections exceeding 70,000 by the day’s end. Cricket Australia made the match accessible by pricing tickets at AUD 10 (approximately INR 530) and offering free entry for children under 15, ensuring a large and diverse audience.

A Historic Moment in Test Cricket

This Test match now ranks as the second-most attended in cricket history, trailing only the 1999 India vs. Pakistan clash at Eden Gardens, which saw an incredible 465,000 fans over five days. The MCG’s ability to draw such large crowds underscores its status as a premier venue for international cricket.

The 1937 record, driven by the legendary Sir Donald Bradman, stood for nearly nine decades but has now been eclipsed by a contest that showcased the excitement and passion of modern-day Test cricket. The event not only celebrated cricket’s rich history but also set a new benchmark for future matches.
