Retention Announcement Likely To Happen Shortly, As The IPL Governing Council Will Convene On Saturday

The highly anticipated announcement regarding the new retention rules for the Indian Premier League (IPL) is expected soon, as the Governing Council is set to meet today. The announcement may come within the next 24 hours, possibly as early as Saturday, although a formal decision is likely to be made in the coming hours.

Cricbuzz has confirmed that the IPL Governing Council meeting is scheduled for Saturday, September 28, at 11:30 AM at the Four Seasons Hotel in Bengaluru. The decision to hold the meeting on Saturday was made last minute, with notices sent to members only on Friday evening. An announcement is typically expected following the meeting.

The report stated, “A formal decision is anticipated within the next few hours,” noting that the official retention rules should be revealed by Sunday, if not on Saturday.

Sources have told Cricbuzz that “it was a last minute decision to call for the IPL GC on Saturday as the notices for the meeting were sent only on Friday evening to the members. There is intense speculation over the retention, with the numbers ranging between 2 to 8. The BCCI might settle at a number somewhere in the middle, 5-6, including the RTM (Right to Match) option,” the report added.

There is speculation that the significant retention decision might be presented to the general body meeting in Bengaluru on Sunday before being made public. In addition to determining the number of retentions, the Governing Council is also expected to decide on the date and venue for the mega-auction.

Currently, it is suggested that the auction could take place at the end of November in a Gulf city, with Saudi Arabia showing interest in hosting it, potentially in Riyadh if approved. There is considerable speculation regarding the retention numbers, estimated to range from 2 to 8, with the BCCI likely to settle on a midpoint of 5-6, including the Right to Match (RTM) option.

Previously, the BCCI held a meeting with IPL team owners in late July to discuss various league matters, including retentions, and gather owner feedback.
