Delhi Capitals captain Rishabh Pant has been fined and suspended for one match for violating the IPL (Indian Premier League) Code of Conduct during his team’s sluggish overrate against the Rajasthan Royals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on May 7.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India penalized all Delhi Capitals players who participated in the match against the Rajasthan Royals, including Rishabh Pant. For the slow over rate, the players were fined INR 12 Lac or 50% of their corresponding match fees, whichever was lower.

Rishabh Pant took offense at the ban and then contested the match referee’s ruling. The BCCI Ombudsman, who was persuaded by the referee’s ruling and Pant’s punishments, reviewed the official appeal that the Delhi Capitals captain had filed.

The Delhi Capitals will suffer a severe hit if Rishabh Pant is unable to play against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, especially because qualification is at stake. The team needs two victories to solidify their playoff candidacy, as they now sit fifth in the standings.

Why did the BCCI ban Rishabh Pant?

Code of Conduct violations are typically made public the day following a game; however, in this case, the judgment was delayed because the Delhi Capitals challenged the match referee’s first ruling, and a virtual hearing was held on May 10 before the IPL Ombudsman upheld the referee’s ruling. The BCCI claimed in a statement that they released,

“Mr. Rishabh Pant, Captain, Delhi Capitals, has been fined and suspended for one match for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct after his team maintained a slow over-rate during Match 56 of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 against Rajasthan Royals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi, on May 7, 2024,” said the IPL’s official statement.

“As it was his team’s third offense of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offenses, Rishabh Pant was fined INR 30 lakh and suspended for one match. The rest of the members of the Playing XI, including the Impact Player, were each individually fined either INR 12 lakh or 50 percent of their respective match fees, whichever is lesser.”

“As per Article 8 of the IPL Code of Conduct, the Delhi Capitals filed an appeal challenging the ruling of the match referee. Following this, the appeal was referred to the BCCI Ombudsman for review. The Ombudsman conducted a virtual hearing and affirmed that the decision of the match referee remains final and binding,” said the IPL’s official statement.

Delhi Capitals captain Rishabh Pant has scored 413 runs in the 12 games that he has played.
