The All-India Senior Selection Committee named Rohit Sharma as the Captain of the ODI & T20I teams going forward. Incidentally, he was recently appointed as the skipper in the shorter formats after Virat Kohli stepped down as the T20I captain after the ICC T20 World Cup. However, Kohli will continue to lead the side in the Tests.
Ever since Kohli stepped down as the T20I captain, there were speculations that Rohit will take over the baton in the 50-overs format. And expectedly, the cricketer from Mumbai has taken over the charge.
BCCI, in a statement, wrote:
“The All-India Senior Selection Committee also decided to name Mr Rohit Sharma as the Captain of the ODI & T20I teams going forward.”

Rohit Sharma has a fair experience of leading India in the absence of Virat Kohli. So far, he has led in 10 matches, winning 8 of those and losing two matches.
Meanwhile, Rohit will have bigger shoes to fill considering the legacy Virat Kohli leaves as the captain of this side. He has captained India in 95 games, winning 65 of those at a winning rate of 70.43. While he has not won an ICC title, Kohli is regarded as one of the most successful ODI captains of the country.
Rohit’s first ODI assignment will be the three One-Day Internationals, the first two in Paarl on January 19 and 21 and the third at Newlands on January 23.
Meanwhile, the selectors are yet to announce the ODI squad and are expected to take a couple of days more to reveal the team that will fly to South Africa for the 50-overs leg.
