India captain Rohit Sharma brought a cheerful vibe to the Christmas Eve press conference in Melbourne. Addressing questions about his form and the team’s Boxing Day Test plans, Rohit showcased his trademark wit and energy.
When asked about discussing Virat Kohli’s struggles with deliveries outside the off-stump, Rohit responded, “You called him a modern-day great. Modern-day greats find their own way to overcome challenges.”
The Indian captain reaffirmed his strong support for Virat Kohli, who has struggled with his tendency to chase deliveries in the corridor of uncertainty outside the off-stump. While Kohli scored a century in the second innings of the Perth Test, he has often fallen prey to Australia’s off-side trap.
In the series so far, Kohli’s scores stand at 5, 100*, 7, 11, and 3, with Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood exploiting his weakness by tempting him into playing outside the off-stump. Although Kohli displayed better discipline in this area during last year’s South Africa tour, he seems more vulnerable in the ongoing series in Australia.
Rohit Silent on His Batting Position
Rohit Sharma dismissed concerns about his form, emphasizing his focus on basics during training at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Declaring himself fully fit for the Boxing Day Test after a brief knee injury scare, Rohit remained non-committal about his batting position in the lineup.
Since arriving in Australia, he has batted at No. 6, stepping aside from the opening role to make room for KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal, who excelled in his absence in Perth. However, Rohit has yet to make a notable impact from the No. 6 spot.
“Let’s not worry about that. I think ‘who bats where?’ is something that we need to figure out within ourselves. It’s not something I should be discussing at every press conference. Whatever it takes for our team to look good or gives the best chance to succeed, we will do that,” Rohit said.
