Rohit Sharma Becomes India’s 2nd Most Successful ICC Captain, Surpassing Sourav Ganguly

India’s cricket captain Rohit Sharma has reached a significant milestone, surpassing Sourav Ganguly to become the second-most successful Indian captain in International Cricket Council (ICC) events. This achievement came after India’s victory over the United States in the 25th match of the T20 World Cup 2024. The match was held at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York on June 12.

Under Rohit Sharma’s leadership, India defeated the USA by seven wickets. This victory marked India’s third consecutive win in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, following their triumphs over Ireland and Pakistan, and secured their spot in the tournament’s Super 8 stage. India’s bowling performance was outstanding, with the USA batters struggling to gain momentum.

Arshdeep Singh shone with the ball, claiming four wickets for just nine runs, and played a crucial role in limiting the USA to a total of 110 runs at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium. However, India’s batting faced early challenges as both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma were dismissed quickly, with Sharma scoring just three runs. Rishabh Pant showed promise with a score of 18, but his innings was cut short by Ali Khan.

Suryakumar Yadav and Shivam Dube then stepped up, rescuing India from a precarious position. Yadav scored an unbeaten 50, while Dube contributed an unbeaten 31. Together, they put on an unbroken partnership of 72 runs for the fourth wicket, guiding India to victory and securing their place in the semi-finals.

This win marked Rohit Sharma’s 17th victory as India’s captain in ICC events. To date, he has captained the team in 20 matches, losing only three. With this, he surpassed Sourav Ganguly’s 16 wins and now stands behind only MS Dhoni, who has 41 wins in 58 games.

The record for the most wins by an Indian captain in ICC tournaments is as follows:

– 41 wins – MS Dhoni (58 matches)
– 17 wins – Rohit Sharma (20 matches)*
– 16 wins – Sourav Ganguly (22 matches)
– 13 wins – Virat Kohli (19 matches)
– 11 wins – Kapil Dev (15 matches)
– 11 wins – Mohammad Azharuddin (25 matches)
