The captain of India for both Test and ODI cricket, Rohit Sharma, has made significant strides in ICC ODI rankings following the eye-catching display of batting prowess during the recent series against Sri Lanka. Despite falling to Sri Lanka by a shocking 0-2, Rohit ended as the top run scorer in the series, scoring 157 runs at an average of 52.33 in three matches.
He achieved this against spinners’ favourable pitches at a superb striking rate of 141.44; it was one of India’s best moments during this series as his great innings showed respect for the game even in tough times. His performance has seen him become number two on ICC’s one-day international rankings because he is undoubtedly one of the finest batsmen worldwide.
Rohit’s winning streak should continue if cricket is to be successful for India in future with this most recent flashy display against Sri Lanka revealing his talent and commitment to the sport.
Rohit Sharma exceeds Shubman Gill and gets closer to Babar Azam:
Rohit Sharma has managed to occupy the second position in the latest ODI Batting Rankings, consequently pushing past Shubman Gill. After Babar Azam, now only Rohit occupies the second position in the ICC ODI Batting Rankings. For reference, Shubman Gill has 763 rating points while Rohit Sharma currently boasts 765. Hence given this development Gill is now rated third in rating of batters on ODIs.
The series of poor performances that Gill suffered against Sri Lanka could have contributed to his downfall. During three ODIs played against Sri Lankans by this 24-year-old opener; he was able to score an average measure of only about 19 runs per game across them, with a total compilation of significantly less only 57 runs.
Gill appeared uneasy facing the spinning ball and had trouble with timing on pitches that helped the spinners throughout the series. His performance has undoubtedly made people wonder if he can handle good spin at this level. Before the Sri Lankan tour, Gill was also named vice-captain of India since the selectors viewed him as a long-term leader.
