Indian captain Rohit Sharma recently provided insights into his future plans with the national team. Despite widespread speculation about his potential retirement from T20Is following the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024, Sharma expressed his intention to continue representing India across all formats for several more years. Amidst his participation in the ongoing IPL 2024 for Mumbai Indians (MI), Sharma’s immediate focus remains on the T20 World Cup set to take place in the West Indies and USA in June.
The Indian team’s prolonged quest for an ICC title weighs heavily on Sharma, now 37, who is determined to break the drought as captain. Despite recent near-misses, such as finishing as runners-up in the 2023 ODI World Cup and the WTC Final, Sharma remains optimistic about securing the coveted T20 trophy.
Rohit Sharma said: “The journey has been wonderful, it has been 17 years; I still hope to play a few more years as well & make an impact in World cricket, Captaining your country is the biggest honour that you can have, and for me, I have never thought that this would arrive where I’ll be captaining one day. But yeah, people say good things happen to good people.”
Reflecting on his illustrious international journey, which commenced at a tender age, Sharma, affectionately known as the Hitman, acknowledged the honor of leading his country, a responsibility he never envisaged early in his career. He described the opportunity to captain a team in a country where cricket holds unique significance as the pinnacle of his career.
He added further: “When I took over as India Captain, I just wanted everyone to drive in one direction that’s how the team sport should be played, it’s not about personal milestones & personal stats & goals, it is about what all 11 of us can bring to the table & win the trophy.”
“I have seen more downs than ups in my life, and the human and person I am today is because of what I have seen in the past, and in the downs,”
Furthermore, Sharma shared his vision for Indian cricket following his appointment as skipper, underscoring his commitment to nurturing talent and driving the team towards continued success. As he juggles his leadership responsibilities with his performance on the field, Sharma remains steadfast in his determination to contribute to India’s cricketing legacy across all formats, aiming for further milestones and achievements in the years ahead.
