In today’s second semifinal of the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2024, Rohit Sharma struck a magnificent fifty runs to lead India to a competitive total against England on Thursday, June 27.

India was put in trouble when they were asked to bat first since Virat Kohli was dismissed for just nine runs in the third over. During the powerplay, India was at 40 for 2, while Rishabh Pant was also unable to establish himself at the bat and was out for just 4.

On a challenging field, Rohit Sharma, however, kept his ground and proceeded to knock an outstanding fifty to set the stage for a respectable total. He used six fours and two sixes to score 57 runs on 39 balls.

Additionally, the captain of India and 47-run scorer Suryakumar Yadav combined for 73 runs. India eventually scored 171 for 7 to end their innings.

Besides, Rohit Sharma has been on top of his game for a long time now and he made it even better by scoring fifty-seven runs. To go on and smash fifty runs as captain of the Indian team at the Men’s T20 World Cup knockout stage is something that no one has ever done amongst Indians before. MS Dhoni never scored a half-century but still managed to lead his side to the T20 World Cup knockout stage, not having made it above fifty.

Rohit Sharma became the fifth Indian to score 5000 international runs as captain:

Rohit Sharma, the captain of the Indian cricket team, became the fifth Indian skipper to accumulate 5000 runs during his tenure across all forms of the sport. The right-hander also had over 19000 runs in total across test cricket, ODI matches,, and other formats by now.

In the process of doing this, he has been able to amass 5013 runs from all the 122 games he has led India in so far. He crossed this mark while batting for England at the semifinal stage of the 2024 T20 World Cup.”

Along with Mohammed Azharuddin, Sourav Ganguly, MS Dhoni, and Virat Kohli, the 37-year-old now becomes a member of the elite group.

In the 213 games that he had skippered for India, Kohli, who tops the records, scored 12883 runs. This is in addition to the 13926 runs he has from the massive 26808 runs across formats that he hasn’t yet led the side account.

The only other Indian captain to reach the five-figure run threshold in his position is MS Dhoni. In terms of games captained for India, Dhoni tops the record after leading his team to three ICC titles.
