Amid rumors about his ODI retirement, India captain Rohit Sharma has started training at a Mumbai gym as he prepares for the upcoming white-ball away series against Australia in October. After the IPL, where his Mumbai Indians were knocked out in the playoffs, Rohit enjoyed a long break with his family.

Having retired from Test and T20I formats, Rohit took some time off, traveling to Abu Dhabi, Switzerland, and the UK. He was even seen supporting the Indian team during the fifth Test at The Oval. Soon after returning to India, Rohit resumed his fitness routine alongside his longtime friend and former India assistant coach, Abhishek Nayar.

Rohit shared a photo with Nayar on Instagram. While he retired from T20Is in 2024, the 38-year-old ended his Test career just before the England tour in June. His last appearance for India was in the ICC Champions Trophy earlier this year.

A recent report by Dainik Jagran regarding Rohit Sharma’s ODI future has stunned the Indian cricket community. According to the report, the upcoming ODI series against Australia might be the last 50-over matches for both Rohit and Virat Kohli.

To remain eligible for selection in the 2027 World Cup, the two veterans must participate in this year’s Vijay Hazare Trophy, India’s top domestic ODI tournament, to maintain their form and fitness.

When Will Rohit Sharma And Virat Kohli Return To Play?

Both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have not played competitive cricket since June but are keen to perform well in the ODI series against Australia in October. They were initially expected to return during the ODI series against Bangladesh in August, but that series has been postponed to next year.

India has several ODIs and Asia Cups scheduled until 2027, but it is uncertain if both players can maintain their fitness and form. Reports suggest that the BCCI and the selection committee might urge Rohit and Kohli to participate in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, India’s domestic 50-over tournament, held in December-January.
